Bentley announced plans in early December 2014 for their
biggest site development addition in its history. It will expand the company’s
headquarters in Crewe as part of a $60 million investment program.
The addition will house the new Bentley SUV planned for
2016. The SUV was originally previewed at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and is
estimated to cost more than $215,000. More details will be revealed later this
year, but it’s predicted to offer a choice of W12 and V8 petrol engines, with
the option of diesel and hybrid technology too.
The 11-acre Chesire-based facility will be home to 1,300
Bentley engineers, including designers, R&D staff and technical support.
Work on this new addition will begin early this year, and is vital to the
future success of Bentley.
“With Bentley’s new research and development center, we will
develop a new generation of Bentleys” said Wolfgang Durheimer, CEO and Bentley
chairman. “Which will continue our commitment of luxury, performance, quality
and engineering excellence.”
The new addition means Bentley has created more than 950
jobs over the past 18 months in preparation for the expansion, and has
continued to thrive in the global car industry.
The development was welcomed by George Osborne, Chancellor
of the Exchequer.
“Bentley is an iconic British brand that exports around the
world. Their decision to create an additional 300 jobs in R&D on a new site
providing close to 1,000 new jobs is fantastic news for Crewe and for Britain,”
said Osborne. “The investment will not only create jobs at Bentley, but support
many more through suppliers across the UK.”
Bentley experienced record high sales in its recent years
and looks to continue that progression without compromising the exclusivity of
their brand, even with their new addition.
